Have you ever dreamt of a place where your every day life gave way to a life of freedom?

If so, then Finland is the place for you. There, you will be greeted by majestic snow-covered landscapes, magical woodlands and the unique nature of the North. Nowhere else will you find a larger selection of winter activities in a setting of complete quiet and seclusion.

Rovaniemi, in the heart of Finland, is where Mother Nature herself goes on holiday and it is a worthwhile vacation spot all year round. Winter however, offers wide open nature, snow covered hills and frozen lakes that can be explored with cross-country skis. In this winter wonder land, sitting outdoors next to an open fire, exploring the forest on snowshoes and of course dog sled riding are all part of the adventure. There is also plenty to do for those who are looking for relaxation. For example, there is nothing more exhilarating after a steaming sauna than a jump into water through a hole in the ice. There are also many sport and cultural activities available.

Winter in Finland is much more than you can imagine and a lot more than you know.

Lodging:

Our typical Finland-style cabins are located in a small village, approximately 1000 km north of Helsinki and 90 km north of Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. They are equipped with an eat-in-kitchen, 2 bedrooms and an alcove with 4 beds. Evenings, you can enjoy the sauna and relax by the fireplace. Since our accommodations are located directly lakeside in the middle of the north Finnish wilderness, one can enjoy nature and solitude.

In order to fully enjoy this fascinating wilderness, you should pack plenty of warm clothing. Clothing worn in layers offers the best protection against the cold. We also provide thermal clothing.

Dog sledding:

Dog sledding is not only the most traditional method of transportation in the snow covered northern wilderness, it is also the most exciting! Let your adventurous spirit awaken and you will be reminded of novels like “White Fang”. You will speed through the snow covered winter landscape at 20 km with a team of 6-8 Huskies. You will also fall in love with the gentle Huskies as you learn about their daily life and routine. You can even help with the feeding and the grooming.

Snowmobile riding:

With full power through the Finnish winter!

The fastest way to explore the snow covered landscape is by snowmobile. Fell the power and speed as you glide over frozen lakes. We will provide you with all of the necessary safety equipment and detailed instruction. Note however, never drive under the influence of alcohol and remain on the marked trails

Cross county skiing:

For those who wish to workout while exploring the Finnish Wilderness, cross county skiing is the way to go. It is no wonder that cross county skiing is by far the most popular winter sport in Finland. You can enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of the northern pine forests and arctic hills from a completely new perspective.

The cross county trails begin directly in front of your door and offer an ever changing landscape, with many trails to choose from.

Note: we do not provide equipment and so each traveler must bring his/ her own.

Snowshoe hikes:

Snowshoes are the perfect way to travel when attempting to explore the Finnish wilderness while traveling off of the beaten trail. Snowshoes, which look like large tennis rackets, are simple to use after a short demonstration and can be taken anywhere.

Reindeer sleighing:

Have you ever had the childhood dream of riding through the snow on a reindeer drawn sled?

In Finland, your childhood dreams come true, and more! Learn about the life and culture of a reindeer breeder and take off with a reindeer on an unforgettable trip, or try throwing a lasso, always an amusing sight.

Ice fishing:

Ice fishing is a very popular sport in Finland and its no wonder with so many excellent fishing spots! How does one fish when the ice can be up to a half meter thick? Ice fishing is a fun and rewarding way to some spend time. Under supervision, you will drill a hole in the ice and even if you don’t catch anything for dinner, we guarantee as souvenir that you will at least get some healthy facial color.

Sauna:

After a long exciting day, it is time to relax in the warmth of a sauna.

Learn something about sauna tradition and the many possibilities. On average, there is a sauna for every three people in Finland, proof of the importance of the sauna in the culture of Finland. For many, the sauna is the ultimate experience in relaxation.

Ice swimming:

You have doubts and hesitate. The cold, naked skin and icy water sound like an unhealthy combination, but the challenge drives you on and you overcome your doubts. A few seconds of splashing about and then you are back in the warmth of the sauna. A rewarding experience.

Northern lights (Aurora borealis):

On a clear dark night you may be able to view the breath taking wonder of the Aurora borealis. This natural phenomenon is caused by solar winds striking the magnetic field of the Earth. The fact that it is practically impossible to say when this phenomenon will appear makes viewing it even more fascinating.
